suggestion: members

I think we all noticed how the forum is beginning to get flooded with spam.

that's why I thought it would be an idea to install some sort of membership, non members can read the forums, but cant post
this membership should be easy to acquire, but encourage the spammers to go some place else

discuss
(I won't appreciate the irony of some gold seller to post on this thread)

Re: suggestion: members

Hmm...
That would be a good idea indeed...

BUT

The problem associated is that people these days are just too lazy to do certain things...
They might say something like "Bleh, I gotta get membership for this shiznit.)

I really don't know what to do :?

Re: suggestion: members

I added another step to the registration process (you have to confirm email now to register), so that should filter some of them out.

I might also tweak the word filters a bit, so that any mention of the word 'runescape,' for example, would be automatically translated to the word 'spam' upon posting. It wouldn't keep them out, but it would be funny as hell.

Re: suggestion: members

Here's the process I have chosen to fight SPAM :
- delete the post
- delete the answers to spam, like insults
- ban the spammer

This way, conversations remain readable.

I think you should add a "copy the 3 letters here" thing for the registration. It generally works pretty well

Yeah, I think we're also going to need a rule about replying to spam. If someone flames the spammer, and I delete the spam post, it looks like they were flaming someone else in the thread, which won't end well. This means we have to delete all such flaming replies as well as the spam, as you said.

'Captchas,' I think they're called. We do have one set up, and I added to it's complexity last night. It works great against spam bots.

I also made it necessary to confirm an email to register. This means one needs a working email to sign up. I'm not sure if this will keep the spammers out, but if I'm feeling especially evil, we could spam the spammers. Hehe.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

The word filter works...

I caught this one before he could even post. He had a rpg spam link in his sig. The filter changed it to say 'spam.'

Yeah, lets make runescape accounts and say "Do you know were I can buy some Balisong Skills for the Flipping Arena?"
